We’re excited to announce Tee Up Fore the Cure’s 2023 featured celebrity guest is Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins!
Stepping up to the plate in 1965 as a relief pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, Fergie went on to conquer the baseball world with his incredible skills, playing for the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and the Boston Red Sox. But it was his unforgettable tenure with the Cubs that truly shone.
“Fergie” won 20 or more games from 1967 through 1972 with the Chicago Cubs. His best single-game performance came in the 1967 All-Star Game, when he struck out six of the top sluggers in the American League: Harmon Killebrew, Tony Conigliaro, Mickey Mantle, Jim Fregosi, Rod Carew and Tony Oliva.
With three seasons as a National League and Cubs All-Star under his belt, Fergie made history in 1971 as the first Canadian and Cubs pitcher to claim the prestigious Cy Young Award.
Fergie’s six-year streak of winning 20 or more games from 1967 to 1972 is the longest in the major leagues since Warren Spahn accomplished the same feat between 1956 and 1961.
He posted a batting average of .165 with 13 home runs, 85 RBI, and 41 bases on balls. Defensively, he had a .954 fielding percentage. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987, and in 1991, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
You can meet Fergie and other celebrities at our Tee Up Fore the Cure golf event on Monday, September 18 at Geneva National! Visit TeeUpForetheCure.com in early spring to register for this all-star event and help support JDRF and Children’s Wisconsin in their mission to cure Type One Diabetes.
